And all the tax collectors and malfunctioning people were coming near to Him to hear Him. And the F’rishe and the scribes too were complaining saying that, “This guy is welcoming malfunctioning people and eating together with them. And He said to them this parable saying, “What human being from among you people having a hundred sheep and having lost one of them doesn’t abandon the ninety nine in the wasteland and go after the lost one until he should find it? And finding it he put it up on his shoulders celebrating and having come into the house calls his friends and neighbors together saying to them, “Celebrate with Me, because I found my lost sheep! I tell you that there will be such joy in the heavenly realm upon one malfunctioning person changing his mind than upon the ninety nine doing what they’re supposed to do, such ones as don’t have a need of a change of mind.”
“Or some woman having ten drachmas1 if she should lose one drachma, doesn’t she grab a lamp and sweep the house clean searches anxiously until she should find it? And having found it she calls her friends and neighbors together saying, “Celebrate together with me, because I found the drachma which I lost. So, I tell you, joy happens in front of the angels of the God upon one malfunctioning person who changes his mind.”
And He said, “Some human being had two sons. And the younger said to their father, ‘Father, give me the portion of the substance that falls to me. And the guy split his living up between them. And with not many days gathering together everything the younger son went abroad into a distant country, and there thoroughly scattered his substance living with abandon. And with his spending everything a strong famine happened down in that country, and he started to run short. And going he clung to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed pigs, and he longed to fill his belly with the carobtree pods which the pigs were eating, and no one gave anything to him. And having come to his senses he said, ‘Many of my father’s wage workers overflow with bread, and I’m being destroyed by starvation here. Having stood up, I will go to my father and I will say to him, “Father, I screwed up against the heavenly realm and in front of you, I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your wage workers.”’ And having stood up he came to his own father. And with his still holding off at a distance his father saw him and was deeply moved and having run he feel upon his neck and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I screwed up against the heavenly realm and in front of you, I’m no longer worthy to be called your son…’ And the father said to his slaves, ‘Quickly! Bring the first long robe and clothe him, and give a ring to his hand and shoes for his feet. And bring the fattened calf, slaughter it, and having eaten we will party, because this son of mine was dead and is alive again, he was lost and is found.’ And they began to party.”
1Roughly one drachma to one denarius.
